The AOA registration period runs from January1 to December 31 every year with registration and payment due on December 1st. Registrants of the Alberta Opticians Association are required to renew their registrations on an annual basis (December 1st).  Registrants will normally receive their annual registration renewal application in the mail during the month of September.

2010 Renewal

Registrants are required to submit to the AOA a completed Renewal Application along with supporting documentation and payment. Renewal forms that are incomplete, missing documentation or contain insufficient payment will NOT be processed. Supporting documents include:

  • Step Three-Self Assessment

Registrants are required to complete mandatory Step Three - Self Assessment in order to renew their registration.  For more information on mandatory continuing education and the Continuing Education 3 Year Cycle, please visit the section on Continuing Education .

  • Undertaking

The AOA has a category of Non-Practicing status. This non-practicing status indicates that you will not practice Opticianry during the time you are a Non-Practicing member. This status is typically used for women on maternity leave, out of country, or if you are leaving the field but wish to maintain your Optician license.

  • Proof of Insurance
AOA reminds all practicing registrants to submit proof of their professional liability insurance. This can be a certificate of insurance or a letter issued by the insurance broker. The policy must contain:
      • Name of the Insurer
      • Registrant's name
      • Expiration date of the policy
      • Insurance liability of at least $1,000,000 per occurrence

The OAC and AOA have joined together to creat a blended membership

  • Mandatory Continuing Education
All members are required to complete mandatory continuing education (CE) credits in order to renew their license at the end of each three-year con-ed cycle. For more information on mandatory continuing education, please visit the section on Continuing Education.
