The AOA has a new category of member called Provisional Optician. These are Opticians who have completed all their training requirements but have not had the opportunity to successfully complete the NACOR Practical Licensing exams as required by standards set out across Canada. Provisional Opticians are required to be under supervision.

NACOR Eligibility

  • A candidate for the NACOR National Licensing Examination must first be registered on the Provisional Register in order to be eligible to take the NACOR exam.
  • Provisional Opticians must still practice under supervision until all requirements are completed for full licensing.
  • The Provisional Register expires each year on December 1st.

How to Apply

Please ensure to complete the Provisional Application form along with the Practicum Agreement or Undertaking before sending to the AOA.

Errors & Omissions Insurance

All applicants for either Provisional or Registered Opticians must provide proof of carrying $1,000,000 liability insurance from your employer or you may purchase coverage directly from the Opticians Association of Canada.

I Passed the NACOR Exam Now What?

Once a Provisional Optician has successfully challenged the NACOR National Licensing Exam you will:

  • Receive a New Member Application from the Alberta Opticians Association (AOA)
  • Complete and return the member application with all necessary documentation to the Alberta Opticians Association
  • The AOA will send an official Practice Permit as a Registered Optician or Registered Contact Lens Practitioner to you
  • You are now a fully licensed member of the AOA without restrictions on your Practice Permit
  • You are not required to pay any further fees until the renewal date of December 1st of the current year
  • A renewal package will be sent to all members and provisional members in the fall of the current year.
