Currently, the Alberta Opticians Association is obligated to comply with legislation under the Health Professions Act. As part of this legislation the AOA must also comply with privacy and personal information legislation. In Alberta we are covered under our provincial privacy act known as the Personal Information and Protection Act (PIPA).

The federal Privacy Act is The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). However, because Alberta has its own Privacy Act (PIPA), it takes precedence and/or overrides the Federal Privacy Act (PIPEDA).

What is PIPA?
Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) sets out ground rules for how private organizations may collect, use or disclose information about you.

It strikes balance between your right to control access to and use of your personal information, with an organization's need to collect and use your personal information for legitimate and reasonable purposes.

PIPA gives you the right to see, and ask for corrections to personal information an organization may have about you. If you think an organization covered by the Act is not living up to its responsibilities under the law, you have the right to take the matter to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta, Frank Work.
